When I said I wanted rain...
I didn't mean this much, all at once. This is a photo from the National Weather Service, showing how much rain we got on Tuesday. Our house is smack in the middle of the 4-5+ inches of rain. It was a record-breaking day, apparently. One that our roof wasn't quite prepared for - we have a leak in the kitchen, right over the kitchen table. A leaky roof is not one of the joys of home-ownership. We are hoping that we just need to have it patched, and not completely replaced, since the problem seems to be in just one spot.
Sorry to say, I am really not mentally equipped to deal with such problems. Usually, I am a forward thinking feminist, capable of dealing with anything that comes my way, but when something goes wrong with my house or car, I revert. I want my husband to step into the stereotypical gender role and fix it for me. If I had a time machine, I would to go back in time to high school and take shop class and auto mechanics, so that my ignorance of those subjects, which is what makes me freak out, goes away. Yeah, yeah, I could probably take such a class now, but it would have been better back then, before the freaking out. Sigh.

Making it mine
When we moved into our house last summer, I declared that I couldn't stand the paint color in the kitchen or in the second guest bedroom, which became Kirby's room. I was going to paint them both as soon as possible, along with all the wood trim in the house. Never happened. Partially, the extent of the work involved in those projects was daunting. Partially, I just couldn't pick a color that I wanted. Now, I hardly notice the mustard-colored walls in the kitchen, and although the trim still bugs me, I can live with it for now. A few weeks ago, however, I decided that I had had enough of the odd argyle pattern on the walls of Kirby's room and the white patches where Kirby had chewed off all the paint. It was time to paint.
The underlying blue-gray color wasn't that bad, but the room just felt like a boy's room, from the 70s. I chose Labor Day Weekend to begin the project, figuring that it gave me time to do my regular weekend activities, as well as some recovery time. After filing 6 months worth of receipts and bills, moving out Kirby, clearing off the bookshelf, and generally discombobulating the room, the first step was to spackle all the little and not-so-little holes in the walls.
There were a lot of holes. Each diamond had holes at each corner, there were big screw holes left from a shelf that had been removed and from the curtain rod holders I removed our first weekend in the house, and there were several Kirby patches. Good thing my mom taught me how to spackle when I was a kid!
Then the spackle had to be sanded, as did the edges of the diamonds, to make sure there would be no funny ridges in the new paint job. Next up came washing down the walls, since they were now coated with a layer of spackle sand and chinchilla dust (chinchillas have to bathe in a very fine volcanic dust - pretty cute to watch, but also very messy). I also had to tape off all the trim, since I decided to leave it for now, since Kirby is likely to chew on it from time to time. Then, and only then, could I get down to the "fun" part of actually painting. After just one coat of tinted primer, everything started to look much better.
The priming took about 3 hours, and since it had to dry, and it was then end of Labor Day weekend, the room had to wait until the next weekend for the rest of the painting. So, this Saturday I started nice and early, and got one coat done before lunch. That coat took about 2 hours and then needed a 4 hour break to dry and set before I could finish. I had better things to do than watch paint dry, like grocery shopping, eating lunch and watching an episode of Leverage, and taking Miikka to a puppy pool party (pictures from that tomorrow), so I welcomed the break.
Benjamin helped a bit with the final coat, which cut the time down to an hour and a half. Yay! On Sunday I was able to remove all the tape from the trim, clear out all the painting gear, vacuum, and start moving stuff back in. I decided to rearrange a little while I was at it, so my desk could be under the window. Kirby hasn't seen the room yet, since I am waiting for the paint smell to dissipate a little bit more - he is a delicate creature, don't want him to go all canary in the coal mine on me! That said, I used low VOC paint and primer from Sherwin Williams, so there really was almost no smell, which was great! I used a box fan in the window while painting to keep air moving, but I don't know how necessary it was. Anyway, I am very happy with the way the room turned out, and I am starting to think about painting other rooms, although the kitchen will probably have to wait until I can get my mom to come down and help!

See, this is what I had been living with! Notice the white patch at the bottom.

Here's where it is weird - the pattern isn't complete.

Starting to look much better, even with only one coat of primer.

Of course, I had to stop for a snack of bagel and a Pimm's Cup - only a little booze while painting...

Voila - an entirely new room!

The month that everything changes
It is the 1st of June. By the end of this month, we should be home-owners! Assuming everything proceeds as it should, we will close on June 17th, and be moving in to the house the following weekend. Whew! And, if I have anything to say about it, we will be getting a puppy the weekend after that.
No, we haven't started packing. We've only been in our apartment for a year (less, actually), and we never fully unpacked, so packing this time shouldn't take too long. And hopefully we will have some help moving this time.
After seeing record numbers of bunnies on my walks last week, I didn't see any over the weekend. I guess I was just walking too late in the morning - they'd all headed home for a morning nap. Almost came home from the grocery store with a kitten though. Some stupid person had a litter in a cardboard box, and was using their children to try to get people to take them. I hate that! There ought to be a law against giving animals away. I wanted to take a kitten just to rescue it from their clutches, but I couldn't. Besides, there is no such thing as a free kitten.

House update

So, it has been sort of a whirlwind last few days. On Friday, we went to see a couple of houses. We liked the first one right away, but went to see the next one anyway. It wasn't what we were looking for. There was one more we really wanted to see, because it appeared to have potential, so we decided to go see it before we made a decision about the 1st Friday house. Well, both the houses we looked at on Saturday bombed, so the Friday house was our choice. We made an offer on Saturday, found out that there was another offer already, and then had to sweat and wait until Monday morning, when the owner returned from out of town.

But, we got it! Then the stopwatch started and the race began. Lining up an inspection, getting the loan process going, finding the proper paperwork... And Benjamin is going out of town for a week and a half, and the car is in the shop. Gah! But, if everything goes as it should, we will close on our 8th wedding anniversary and be out of our apartment by the end of June. Anyway, here are a few of pictures of the house.

Trek part 3
Thanks to our persistence on Day two, day three was only about 8 1/2 hours of driving, and only 3 states. We arrived at our new home around 5 PM, and had time to go get a real dinner (although we did have to hunt for utensils and plates to eat it on) and get the bed set up. The first thing we noticed was that it wasn't hot. In fact, it was downright chilly - only about 70. Heck, it hasn't been that cold in Austin for months, even though it has been a "cool" summer. And that was at 5:30. By bed time, we had to drag out the comforter in order to stay warm. But I am not complaining - I'd rather put more clothes on to stay warm than have to take them off. I mean, you can only take off so many, and then even when you are unclothed, you are still hot...
The house is great. It is about the same square footage as our last apartment, but feels much bigger. I mean, there are windows on all sides of the house, not just the one that doesn't have neighbors attached. And speaking of neighbors, we have some, but they are not actually touching our walls. We have a great screened in porch (where I am at the moment), and a good sized backyard. The Erie Canal is at the end of the garden, and yes, we have seen a few boats go by. I saw a woodchuck in the yard this morning, strolling and munching his way across the lawn.
So, we are here, and almost settled. Cleo and Oliver have stopped hiding at every noise or movement, and are staking out their favorite places. We found the farmer's market on Sunday morning and got blueberries, peaches, apples, tomatoes, garlic, onions...
